Look Good, Feel Great in Canada's Yoga Jeans

A good pair of jeans is a staple in everyone's wardrobe. Man, woman, teen, child -- finding a pair of jeans that fit properly will not only elevate your style, but your confidence, too.

There was a period in my life where I actually refused to wear jeans -- I just hated them. They often felt heavy or stiff, bunched in wrong places and stretched out in others. Over time, I've tried many, many different styles, colours, fabric and brands.

This is what I look for in a pair of kick ass jeans:

Stretch. This is the ultimate. I don't want to be squeezing into them when they come out of the dryer, and I don't want to be doing squats or lunges to get them on. Also important: once they do stretch out, I don't want them to sag on my butt and knees, looking sloppy. Then I need to wash them after every wear. Who does that!?

Fit. This is pretty obvious, but they need to fit my body. Of course, everyone's body is different. Mine happens to be curvy and I'm petite (aka short). I likely can't wear the same jean as someone who is 5'10" and 100 pounds. I need jeans that will hug my curves without being too tight. And let's take a minute to talk about rise. I don't wear low-rise anymore. Ain't happening. I'm not the only one, either, which is why denim manufacturers are making trendy styles in mid and even high-rise cuts. Thank goodness for that.

Comfort. Again, pretty obvious. When I was on mat leave, I had a uniform that consisted of leggings or yoga pants and a tunic. It's not difficult to fall into this trap, but it's certainly difficult to crawl out of it. Finding a pair of jeans that gives you the comfort of leggings but the style of jeans is where it's at. Then at least you're half-way presentable -- save for the mom bun and bags under the eyes.

Price. Gone are the days where I'm spending $300 on jeans. Period.

Over the years, I've managed to find a few pairs of jeans that fit my criteria. I want to tell you about one brand in particular that has impressed me for all my aforementioned reasons, and one big important one -- they're 100% Canadian.

Second Denim Co is a Canadian denim company founded in 2000 by brothers Eric and Jacob Wazana. Their goal was to create the most comfortable pair of jeans in the world and to make women of all ages, body shapes and walks of life feel confident, beautiful and sexy.

Their Yoga Jeans are entirely handcrafted at the Yoga Jeans Production Facility in Quebec.

Here's what I love about my yoga jeans: they're comfortable. Every single time. They go on easily and don't gape or sag or squeeze. They wash well and dry well (in the dryer). I love the colour. These babies are called High Rise Ankle in Rose, which actually hit me like a full length jean. If you're taller, for sure it would be an ankle pant. You'll notice I cuffed them to make them a bit shorter with sandals for the summer, but I could wear the full length, too. I like that I can wear them with flat sandals to run around with my kids, or with heels to head out for dinner. They have a rich quality that is transitional and easy to wear.

Yoga Jeans come in a gazillion different fits and styles and colours. I think my next pair will be a darker blue that will take me through fall and winter. Oh, and here's a tip when you're buying: go down a size. These jeans have plenty of give so you don't want them too loose -- plus it feels really good to buy a smaller size! Thank you, Second Denim.

Yoga Jeans are available at Jean Machine and select denim stores. For a full list of retailers and styles, visit their website.

  1. Oooh, a pair of these are on my shopping bucket list. Thanks for the tip of going down a size, as post-pregnancy I'm not exactly sure what size I am.
