April 3 - one year later

One year ago - April 3, 2012 - we brought our baby home from the York Central Hospital NICU after spending 9 weeks in hospital following her birth.

Today - April 3, 2013 - I started work again.

My 14-month leave was extraordinary. I learned so much about this beautiful little creature my husband and I created, and more than that, I learned a lot about myself.

I learned to slow down: slow down your driving speed, your walking speed, your need to rush. Take every moment in and savor it. More than that, if you get crazed over being a few minutes late, maternity leave will make you insane. Everything takes longer with a baby and toddler.

I've learned to laugh. Laugh and smile at things I normally wouldn't have, because as adults we take so much for granted. Babies see the world in a whole new/different way and it's a refreshing way to live. Plus, everyone is more enjoyable to be around when they're laughing and smiling.

Most importantly, I learned that I've become not only a role-model, but a hero to someone - my baby. No matter what I look like, how my day was, if I have a headache or am not feeling well, a smile from her will make me better. That's the magic of being a mom.

  1. I remember the day we brought our son home from the NICU, and our 1 year celebration of that day as well.
The time goes by so quickly, they grow so fast.
