Congratulations Barbie on 60 years of Inspiration

Did you know Barbie was an astronaut before Neil Armstrong went to the moon?

It's true.

The iconic doll, who has had more than 200 careers to date, celebrates her 60th anniversary today. And as a mom of two daughters, I think Barbie is just as relevant for little girls today as she was in 1959.

Inspiring Girls: Since 1959, Barbie's purpose has been to inspire the limitless potential in every girl. Barbie, through her various aspirations and careers, teaches young girls that they can be anything they want to be.

Barbie has been a teacher, a news anchor, a firefighter, a doctor, a scientist and a stylist. This year, she will be an astrophysicist, a polar marine biologist, a wildlife conservationist and a wildlife photographer.

Closing the Dream Gap: Studies show that starting at age 5, many girls begin to develop limiting self-beliefs. Barbie is working hard to close the dream gap, by inspiring girls through imaginative play to try new things and continue dreaming of their future potential.

At the 60th Anniversary celebration at the CN Tower, we were privileged to hear from Canadian Olympic and World Ice Dancing Champion, Tessa Virtue, who shared her love for Barbie dolls as a child and reminded us all that Barbie continues to be a role model for many children.
As Barbie inspires yet another generation of young women, there is a call to create a new narrative of beauty standards, to build each other up and ensure our values and our voices (as women) are being heard. Barbie of 2019 is reminding young girls to break barriers and to close the dream gap.

I have been a fan of Barbie for decades. My sister and I would play for hours with our Barbie Caravan, Corvette and Ice Cream shop. Believe it or not, I still collect Holiday Barbie every single year.

So, cheers, Barbie -- on 60 years of growth, success, inspiration. Thank you for continuing to inspire young girls all over the world to dream and to believe in themselves.
