Set Up Sunday So You Can Rock the Week

Guys, it's Sunday night and I'm sitting down to do some work -- not exactly what I want to do to cap off a pretty great weekend, but there's a good reason. Since starting my own business, I've tried to unplug as much as possible on the weekends to spend time with my family, and, especially in the summer, to enjoy the weather.

This weekend was no exception: we spent hours in the garden, hit up a splash pad, saw both sets of grandparents, celebrated a birthday party, and managed to get groceries done, too. All in all, a great weekend.

And the way I'm able to do that is because I plan to. And here we are -- Sunday night.
Whether you're a business person or a typical busy parent, this next tip is for you:

Use your Sunday. Set up Sunday so you can rock the week.

Here are some things I do every Sunday night:

  1. I look at my week ahead. Do I have any meetings, any shoots, any late nights? Do we need babysitters or extra childcare or assistance? I think about what I'll wear to these meetings or events, and I sometimes even go so far as thinking about when I'm going to shower.
  2. What to eat? We technically meal plan (or think about dinners) when we go grocery shopping, but I will come up with a loose plan about what we're going to eat each night, especially if we have a scheduled appointment or event. Those nights need easy meals, sometimes made in advance. And if I have time, I'll use Sunday to make those meals -- chili, Shephard's Pie, soup, stews -- all great made ahead of time.
  3. Scan emails. I don't spend a lot of time doing this on Sunday, but I do open my inbox, and delete any emails that aren't important, and respond to ones that are. That way, the recipient gets their email first thing Monday morning, and, as my dad would say, you're off to the races!
  4. Start something. This is sometimes challenging after a long and busy weekend, but I try and start something on Sunday night. That way, I can finish it on Monday and the start of my week already feels accomplished. (It's all mindset, I tell you!) So, it could be a new project, a new edit, an email, anything -- just start something that you have on the agenda for the week.
And that's it -- and you know what? It works. It makes my Mondays feel less Monday-like, and the rest of my week set up for successes.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
