10th Annual Women to Women Symposium

Did you know November is National Entrepreneurship Month? Neither did I.

About two years ago, I lost my job and made the decision to start my own business. There were (and sometimes still are) a lot of tears, self-doubt, long days and nights, uncertainty. But there's also a lot of gratification intertwined.

They say "time flies when you're having fun", and I'm incredibly proud to say I'm coming up on my second anniversary as an entrepreneur this spring. I have learned a lifetime of lessons in these two years, and I wouldn't be here without the support and guidance of many fellow entrepreneurs, leaders and friends who have given me time and advice, as well as business.

I've since spoken to many brand new entrepreneurs, and they often ask how I "get my name out there". Well, one of the first things I did, even before I had a logo and a website, was join the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce.

Being part of this association has given me access to countless networking sessions, speaking opportunities and conferences. You don't have to be an entrepreneur to get involved, but there are lots of business owners and business professionals at their events.

One event I've been fortunate to attend for the last few years has been the Women to Women Symposium. Now in its 10th year, the Symposium gathers hundreds of women in one room for one day to discuss everything from work-life balance to finances. There are often keynote speakers or panels of women leaders, and this year, Margaret Trudeau will be delivering the keynote address.

The theme of the day is always to Inspire, to Empower, and to Connect, and every year, I leave the event feeling all of those sentiments: inspired, empowered, connected.

And understood.

I always feel understood. Why understood?

Because, many times, in this wonderful world of business ownership, you feel very alone; but when you're surrounded by like-minded individuals, your problems and your challenges all of a sudden seem commonplace.

I encourage you if you have not been, to learn more about the event and purchase a ticket. You don't have to be a member to attend, and you don't have to attend with a friend, either. (Of course, the more the merrier!) It is a welcoming crowd and I'm certain you will find at least a few people to chit chat with through lunch and breaks.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 14 at Paramount Eventspace in Vaughan. And if you see me and we haven't met yet, please introduce yourself!

Hope to see you there!
