Why Charleston is a Perfect Romantic Getaway

We did it. We took our first trip without children. And it was wonderful. While we were only gone for 4 days, it felt longer, and yet, an ideal length time to reconnect, enjoy quality time as a couple, and as a friend of mine put it, date your spouse.

A few weeks ago, I asked for suggestions on a couple's getaway, and when all was said and done, Donny and I booked our first trip without kids to Charleston, South Carolina. I had stumbled across Charleston more than once online, so I was intrigued to learn more. Turns out, I wasn't the only one.

Charleston, SC is booming and gaining popularity at a rapid pace, both for tourism and relocation.
I had a few people ask me why we chose Charleston for our first kids-free vacay:

1. It's Super Pretty: OK, so I didn't travel to the Southern US for pink buildings, but seriously, this has got to be one of the most picturesque cities I've ever been to. Between colonial architecture to wrap-around porches, to lush flora and palms, there are literally thousands of spots to snap a picture in this small historic city. We spent hours wandering the narrow roads and cobblestone alleys admiring the homes and how well they were maintained, some 200 years after they were built.

2. It's a Foodie's Dream City: Foodies and those in pursuit of a perfect cocktail have flocked to Charleston for years now. It boasts dozens of unique, local eateries from renowned chefs, as well as vintage-style bars, rooftops and lounges. Charleston cuisine offers an abundance of seafood and crudo options, including an impressive variety of oysters from the state and Eastern seaboard, but also a rich Lowcountry Cuisine that pays homage to hearty, Southern classics. If you love great food, you'll get tons of it in Charleston.

3. It's Quiet: There are surely opportunities to enjoy live music or entertainment, but Charleston is primarily a quiet, calmer city. The culture is slower and simpler, with the Southern Hospitality we've all heard so much about. The people are very friendly, the roadways are safe for walking, biking and grabbing an Uber/Lyft, and the pace was just what we needed to unwind.

4. It's Not too Far, Yet Close to the Beach: Charleston is about 5 hours from Toronto (with a connecting flight), and about 20 minutes from a variety of beautiful beaches. We knew we didn't want to travel to an all-inclusive, but an afternoon at a beach is always welcome. We were able to grab a spend a few hours by the coast and soak up some rays.

5. There's Not Too Much To Do: While there are certainly tourist spots to hit up and tours you can take, you also have the option to forego all the typical touristy stuff and explore the city solo, which we loved. Charleston itself isn't too busy and you don't have to worry about cramming too many activities into a short amount of time. In fact, we took some time every day to come back to our room in the afternoon to cool off, relax and enjoy a glass of bubbly.
